Luke 1:26-38

Children Are A Gift From God
by Sandra Tolson

God sent me three packages
That needed special care
“Take care of these tiny gifts
For they are very rare.”

“Watch over them with all your love
And let them feel your touch
Take care of their every need
For you are needed very much.”

“These gifts will grow up very fast
As you soon will see
Love them with all your heart
And let them be what they will be.”

“When these gifts have fully grown
Look at Heaven up above
Know they exist because of God
And all his precious love.”

Answer and discuss the following question with your group.

  1. The poem celebrates children as a gift, yet parenting can be very challenging. Describe how parents can deal with the challenges of parenting and still celebrate their child as a gift from God.

So they [Mary and Joseph] started off really bad. He needed some supernatural convincing. This was not going to be easy.

Why were Mary and Joseph chosen? What was it about them that made them the kind of people that God would want to raise Jesus?

Refer to the following scriptures and answer/discuss the following questions.
Luke 1:26-38

  1. The angel Gabriel told Mary the reason she was chosen to be the mother of the Messiah. As you read this, would you say it was only because God chose (favored) Mary, or that something was particularly unique about Mary, or a combination of both? Explain.

  1. How does Mary’s response (verse 38) reflect her faith?

  1. Read Matthew 1:18-25. In a dream Joseph received a message from an angel. How did Joseph’s next action reflect his faith?

We don’t get a lot of answers from God – especially when it comes to parenting. What we do get is guidance. What we do get is an amazing amount of trust from him.

He believes in us. He really does. He believes in us so much that he would trust us with children. And he is willing to come alongside us and help us – and give us courage and wisdom (that we don’t have enough of).

Every child is a gift from God – that was the purpose of the visit to the temple for Mary and Joseph. It was an acknowledgement that this baby was a gift from God.

Refer to the following scriptures and answer/discuss the following questions.
Psalm 127:3; Proverbs 17:6

  1. When a parent is facing bad circumstances how does she/he find strength in the truth that children are a gift from the Lord?

  1. Mary and Joseph lived with many financial and social limitations and yet God gave them the responsibility to parent Jesus, the Son of God. How does a parent set the example for their children in the middle of tough circumstances?

Reflection and Wrap-up

  1. Mary and Joseph took steps of faith as they realized that they had a huge responsibility as parents. What steps of faith do parents take as they do their best to raise their children?

  1. Parents following the example of Mary and Joseph must resist the temptation to be overwhelmed or to succumb to circumstances that are unfavorable. Recall/share about a time in your life that you struggled to NOT succumb to negative and hopeless thinking and overcame it.
